Valerian is a small flowering plant that has numerous known benefits and which has been used in pharmacology for many years. A number of different drugs on the market use chemicals derived from valerian. In particular, the root is used to make medicines and tea. Valerian can also be taken orally in capsule form, liquid as a tincture, extract, infused in tea,combined with other ingredients in a tablet.
Recently, many people are turning to valerian root as a means of stress relief. Scientists are not entirely sure how valerian works, but they suspect that ingesting valerian increases the amount of a certain neurotransmitter in your brain called GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid). The more GABA that you have in your brain the lower your feelings of anxiety and stress. This calming affect has been used over the years to help with insomnia and prepare the mind to go to sleep. Some recent studies show that using valerian root more frequently makes the treatment more effective. In fact, results were seen most prominently after a few weeks of usage.
While valerian is best known for its use in insomnia it is also used for a numerous conditions related to stress including depression, mild tremors, epilepsy, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), restlessness, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
To use valerian as a treatment it is recommended to ingest the treatment three times throughout the day. As noted previously, valerian is available in a number of different forms including: as capsules, teas, infusions, tinctures, and extracts. Valerian is not recommended for those who are pregnant, as not enough research has been done on its effects on pregnancy. Though no serious side effects have been seen with valerian. On rare occasions, some people may see an increase in headaches, sluggishness, and in severe cases some depression.
